In June 2014, I attended the weekend Photo Book festival in Bristol, with colleagues I was teaching with at the time. It was a revelation.

An incredible array of inspiring photobook makers spoke and showed their work. We were inspired and determined to adapt one of our course modules to incorporate the photobook, which we felt was the way forward in an increasingly screen-based photography world.

I volunteered to teach the module and felt that I had to 'do', to 'make', as well as 'talk'. I felt my way, often clumsily, around this new medium incorporating photography, sequencing, layout and design.

Inevitably, I discussed students' work with them, but also invited them to input on my ongoing efforts. In the summer of 2016, I self-published '23, La Creuse', a small zine-style book made up of 23 photos of the number '23' in the region of France we had been visiting regularly, whose departmental code was 23.

That was it. I was hooked. Little did I know that this would take up the next decade of my life.
